The SHAFE Foundation will host a Satellite Event as part of the New European Bauhaus Festival on 12 June, from 13:00 to 15:00 CET.
An online workshop titled People, Places and Technologies for Intergenerational Solidarity and Fairness will bring together experts, practitioners, and communities to exchange perspectives, engage in critical debate, and reflect collaboratively. The session will focus on how people, places, and technologies can be more effectively integrated to promote intergenerational solidarity, fairness, and care, across the life course with a focus on ageing societies. Rather than viewing ageing as a sectoral issue, the forum positions it as a shared societal condition that challenges the quality, resilience, and humanity of our built, social, and technological systems.
Guided by the NEB values of sustainability, inclusion, and beauty, the event will take a living-systems approach around three key themes:
- Identity, exploring how cultural continuity and social memory can be maintained while fostering growth;
- Flow, examining how environments, services, and technologies can adapt to changing needs and capacities; and
- Boundary, reflecting on dignity, care, and meaning at the intersections of private and shared spaces, autonomy and support, and visibility and protection.
We will try to deepen understanding of how NEB principles can be applied in ageing and care contexts, connect stakeholders from housing, care, technology, and social innovation, and share emerging practices from across Europe. Participants will also identify insights to inform future NEB initiatives, policy development, and demonstration projects. A wide audience is targeted, including policymakers at all levels, SMEs and start-ups in architecture, design, construction, digital technologies, and creative industries, as well as NGOs, foundations, civil society organisations, artists, academics, researchers, and community leaders. Citizens are also invited, highlighting the NEB’s commitment to participatory dialogue and democratic engagement.
The NEB Festival 2026, taking place from 9 to 13 June 2026, will highlight the transformative potential of democratic engagement in shaping more inclusive and sustainable communities. It will focus on the active role of empowered citizens and local authorities in designing their environments, with affordable housing recognised as a key pillar of democratic participation. The festival invites participants to reimagine the built environment, prioritising life first, then the spaces we inhabit, and only then the buildings themselves.
